The Middle Eastern aviation industry does face challenges – in some cases, a chronic lack of profitability – but it has largely bucked the recent global trend of falling passenger and cargo traffic.

It took a long time, plenty of investment and lots of hard work for the Gulf to build its modern aviation infrastructure. There are certain events, however, that were key in shaping the industry as we have now come to know it.

In this Special Report, arabiansupplychain.com has identified ten events that we believe helped shape the GCC’s modern aviation industry. To compile this list, we scoured the archives and put our collective heads together as an editorial team. We hope you find the list informative and please let us know your thoughts at the bottom of the article.

If you look around and see the figure heads of all the other airlines in the Gulf, like Emirates, Air Arabia, Qatar, Etihad, Bahrain Air, Oman Air and Sama, you will find they are all ex Gulf Air. The proud airline/university that produced all of them and made it possible for the achievements of today's Gulf aviation industry.

Agree with Leo
I wouldn't put Qatar Airways on there either. Air Arabia, Gulf Air and Emirates have either changed the way we travel or had massive impacts on broader economic development. Qatar Airways isn't at this level just yet.

10 Events that shaped the Gulfs Aviation Industry
Good list. Certainly don't think Qatar Airways is worthy of the list as yet, certainly not before Etihad. Significant the impact on the region Saudia being forced to move into the modern age and allow foreign carriers into Riyadh in the 80s and then losing their much protected domestic status just recently.

Guys don't you think emergence or entrance of Qatar Airways contributed much in shaping the Gulf aviation industry?
